Acer unveils Aspire P3 Ultrabook convertible

Acer brought a whole bunch of folks out to NYC for a global press conference and made sure the attending press got their money's worth. In addition to outing the unique convertible R7, the company unveiled the Aspire P3 -- its first convertible Windows 8 Ultrabook. The screen can be angled forward to use as a traditional (ish) laptop or completely folded down in slate mode. As you can see in the image, there's even a place to clip on a stylus. Acer wasn't too forthcoming with specs during the presentation, but we'll be sure to dig up those specifics when we get our hands-on (which should be coming shortly)...

Acer announces Iconia B1-A71, a wallet-friendly 7-inch Jelly Bean slate

Acer is expanding its tablet lineup with a new budget-minded 7-inch slate running Jelly Bean. The Iconia B1-A71 pairs a dual-core 1.2GHz processor from Mediatek with 512MB of RAM for a machine that certainly wont set any benchmark records, but wont hurt any wallets either. The rest of the specs, like the WSVGA screen, 8GB of storage and lone 0.3-megapixel camera are certainly also helping keep costs down. At 11.3 ounces and 11.3mm thin it's a pretty svelte device, especially considering its expected starting price of under $150. Sadly there's no concrete time frame for release.

Acer outs C710-2605 Chromebook, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 100GB Google Drive for two years

When we tried out Acer's C7 Chromebook, we liked the price, but some aspects of the build let it down. Now, the firm's updated the line with a new model -- the C710-2605. This time the price goes up to $299, but for your money you get twice the RAM (4GB) a bigger hard drive (500GB) as well as an improved battery (now 5,000 mAh). The form factor remains the same -- at 11.6 inches -- along with the same 1,366 x 768 display and 1.10GHz Celeron chip as before. Other features include WiFi in a/b/g and n flavours, a built in webcam, three USB ports, HDMI, VGA and Ethernet LAN. Of course, Chrome OS was designed for the cloud, so you'll get 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years thrown into the deal as well. Surprised by the stealth release? So were we, but the good news is, it looks like you can pick one up right away for the afore mentioned asking price, just head on over to the source.

Acer unveils TravelMate B113 ultraportable with student-friendly $399 price

Acer's TravelMate line of notebooks usually skews toward the business set, but its latest model is made for that other breed of on-the-go types: students. The new TravelMate B113 is an 11.6-incher weighing in at three pounds and measuring one inch thick. Processor options top out a Core i3 Ivy Bridge CPU with 4GB of RAM, and the hard drive offers a max capacity of 500GB. The 11.6-inch display sports a ho-hum resolution of 1,366 x 768 -- and isn't touch-enabled for Windows 8 -- but then again we're looking at a price of $399 and up. Acer officially launches the Iconia Tab A110, with Tegra 3 and Jelly Bean

The Acer Iconia Tab A110 first debuted back at Computex, in June. Back then, the 7-inch device was running Android 4.0, propelled along by its Tegra 3 processor. Slated for a Q3 release, we heard following the show that the A110 would in fact be bumped up to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean before it hit the shelves. True to their word, it's Q3 -- just, the device has been bumped to Jelly Bean, and a formal release has been announced. 

The A110 is already up for pre-order with at least one UK based retailer, priced at £180. For the money we get -- besides Jelly Bean and Tegra 3 of course -- 8GB on board storage, expandable via microSD card, 1GB of RAM, a 1024x600 display, a 3420mAh battery, HDMI out and a 2MP front facing camera.

Acer introduces Aspire M3 and V5 touch-enabled laptops

Acer is touch-enabling its Aspire M3 ultrabook and Aspire V5 notebook this week at IFA 2012. We got to see non-touch display versions of the M3 and V5 at Cebit earlier this year, but the company is shipping displays on both laptops that support 10-points of touch for Windows 8. Acer's M3 touch series ultrabook features the same 15.6-inch display size as the M3 and an Nvidia GT640M GPU, coupled with a weight of 2.3kg and 22mm thin frame.

The Acer V5 touch series remain largely the same spec wise from the non-touch versions. The V5 touch will ship in 14-inch and 15.6-inch versions, but Acer appears to have dropped the 11.6-inch version that was available on the non-touch V5 edition. Both laptops will include Intel Ivy Bridge processors and optical drives. The 14-inch model weighs in at 2.1kg and is 21mm thick, while the 15.6-inch model weighs 2.4kg and is 23mm thick. Both will be available in a selection of colors, but Acer has not yet revealed pricing or availability.

AcerCloud service launches in UK, France, Germany, and Italy

Acer has announced the launch of its AcerCloud service in Europe, with a client coming preloaded on all new laptops and desktop computers in the UK, France, Germany, and Italy. Presenting at the IFA trade show in Berlin, the Taiwanese manufacturer cautioned that the service — an own-brand competitor to the likes of Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft's SkyDrive — is still in beta. An AcerCloud Portal app has been available in Google's Play Store since at least June, but has not been functional.

Acer announces Aspire ZS600 all-in-one with multitouch display

Acer has announced the Apsire ZS600, a new all-in-one desktop computer focused on media and entertainment. Offering a 23-inch Full HD LED display with 10-point multitouch, the ZS600 also includes inbuilt speakers with Dolby Home Theatre v4.0 audio enhancement, a TV tuner, and an optional Blu-ray drive — it sits on an adjustable stand with a tilt range of roughly 20 degrees.

Acer has not yet released specific details of the ZS600's processor, RAM, or graphics, though a press release mentions a "3rd generation Intel iCore processor." The company is billing the ZS600 as "the hub of your digital life," an adaptable device which can be used for work as much as entertainment.

HP, Acer, Lenovo eye Windows 8 tablets

Hewlett-Packard, Acer, and Lenovo, among others, are expected to bring out Windows 8 tablets using Intel's latest system-on-a-chip.

HP and Acer are working on designs, a source familiar with the vendors' plans told CNET. In addition, details leaked today about a Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2, which will also use Intel's Clover Trail system-on-a-chip (SoC).

These Intel-based Windows 8 designs are distinctly different from Windows RT tablets that will use ARMchips. Windows RT devices use a version of Windows 8 that does not offer backward-compatibility with the millions of existing Windows software programs. Intel-based systems offer that compatibility.

And this is likely just a small sampling of Intel-based Windows 8 tablets slated to hit on October 26, when Windows 8 launches. "We are... tracking more than 20 Windows 8 tablet designs based on our low-power and low-cost Clover Trail Atom SoC in addition to a number of core-based tablets," Intel's CEO Paul Otellini said on July 17.

Laptop-tablet hybrids, or so-called convertibles such as Asus' Taichi, are also expected. Taichi uses a faster but less power-efficient Intel Ivy Bridge chip, the same chip that powers ultrabooks and Apple's MacBook Air.

Throw the already announced Microsoft Surface Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro products into the mix, and it's obvious the market will get crowded quickly.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 will sport a 10.1-inch IPS 1,366x768 display, weigh in at about 650 grams (1.4 pounds), have a thickness of 9.8mm (0.39 inches), and include an HSPA+broadband option, according to Techin5.

HP, Acer, and Lenovo declined to comment.
