Google Smartwatch: Will it be an 'iPhone moment' for wearables?

Despite all the promises, smartwatches remain an acquired taste. Yes, there's a market but one that largely caters to the likes of health junkies and early adopters.

Fitness bands are cheap and light but too minimalist. Samsung's Galaxy Gear is all brawn but lacks device compatibility and email support. And the Pebble, one of the first true-blue smartwatches, is still trying to build an app ecosystem the way that Google and Apple did for their smartphones. It's an uphill battle for Pebble, the smartwatch darling, and it won't get any easier when those tech titans join the fray...

Earliest demos of iPhone tech were clunky and 'huge'

The small device known as the iPhone that fits in your pocket wasn't always so tiny.

In fact, one of the early demos was so clunky that its description conjures up images of the first, massive mainframe computers, instead of the slick handset-computers Apple eventually introduced in July 2007.

In a long magazine piece published online Friday in The New York Times, then-Apple executive Tony Fadell recalled Steve Jobs showing him an early example of the phone's eventual touch-screen technology in mid-2005...

Is Apples Touch ID Secure

Earlier today I posted a video on the Geekanoids Channel, which essentially was meant to be a bit of fun. However, on looking over the claims Apple made during their Keynote announcement of this technology, their video highlighting it and their website, it has made me question just how secure Touch ID is.

Essentially, this new technology is meant to provide iPhone 5s users a way of securing their device, which can then only be unlocked by their fingerprint(s). Supposedly much more secure than a password.
During the keynote presentation, Phil Schiller said that the sensor scans through the the LIVE layers of your skin. This was also highlighted during their video presentation on the feature, which adds that the sensor essentially takes a "high resolution image of your fingerprint from the sub-epidermal layers of your skin".

From the various claims, I would imagine many people, like myself, were convinced this offers a very high level of security. The words "Live Layers" surely mean that the finger unlocking the iPhone 5s has to be on a living person and not an inanimate object. Surely Apple had thought of this. According to Apple, Touch ID only works by taking a high resolution images of the "sub-epidermal layers of your skin". If this is the case, why does the technology get fooled by a hotdog (aka wiener, sausage, frankfurter)? Surely, the hotdogs that I purchased from the supermarket to make my video were not alive! They certainly were not barking, mooing, or clucking. If such manufactured objects can be used to fool the system, then surely identical objects could be used to unlock multiple devices. I can see it not being long before Touch ID is truly hacked and cracked.

I have brought this to Apples attention, giving them the right to reply, in the hope they will further explain the technology. If we get a reponse, the update will be published here.

Judge in Brazilian 'iPhone' Trademark Lawsuit Rules in Apple's Favor

Apple has won the right to legally use the "iPhone" name in Brazil after a judge ruled in favor of the Cupertino company in an ongoing lawsuit with IGB Electronica. IGB Electronica, a Brazilian cell phone company, originally filed for the iPhone trademark in 2000 but did not use the name until December of 2012 when it released a line of IPHONE Android phones.

Following the launch of the Android IPHONEs, Brazil's Institute for Industrial Property ruled that IGB had exclusive rights to the trademark as related to mobile phones. Apple appealed the decision, and on Tuesday, Judge Eduardo de Brito Fernandes overturned the ruling, denying IGB exclusive access to the iPhone mark...

iPhone 5c CROCS Inspiration & Giveaway

It seems that Apple have been taking a lot of digs lately, with many saying they have not been innovating. With the recent launch of their new iPhone 5c, maybe they got their inspiration from the funky rubber footwear we all love so much. That said, even if their inspiration did come from Crocs, the colours certainly are vibrant.

Here at Geekanoids, we were lucky enough to get our hands on an iPhone 5c today, in the striking green colour. You can see us unbox it here, in all its glory. Despite the back casement being plastic, it certainly does not feel cheap. Apple did their research and engineered the back from quality materials, that are solid in the hand, with no creaking or flex.

The screen, performance & overall user experience have been great so far. It is too early to comment on battery life with such a new model. There are plenty of charging options available out there today, so even if your 5c does run out of juice midway through the day, it is often not an issue. During my first day testing, I did find the back casing get a little warm though. This may be the battery or the processor, I am not sure at this stage.

Button placement and ports seem pretty much the same as last years iPhone 5, with the only noticeable change being along the bottom edge where the microphone, speaker, headphone jack & lightning connector can be found. The tiny drilled holes are finished to perfection though. Apple really have done a stellar job.

If you are as excited as we are here at Geekanoids about this new smartphone from Apple and really eager to get your hands on one, the awesome people at MobileFun are giving away an unlocked 16GB iPhone 5c … with a choice of colours for the winner. The giveaway is very easy to enter and can be found here. Give it a go, you never know your luck !
