It seems like I have been been waiting ages for the 10.5.3 update. For a long time I have been having wifi problems on my MacBook Pro, along with a few smaller problems. Well, that day is finally here and I am hoping that it solves some, if not all of them.

Quark announce QuarkXpress 8

DUSSELDORF, Germany - May 29, 2008 - Today Quark announced QuarkXPress® 8, the next major release of the industry standard page-layout and design software that revolutionised publishing more than 20 years ago. QuarkXPress 8 delivers superior design power through a new, intuitive interface developed purposefully for the creation of high-end page layout; print, Web and Flash® authoring tools; design-driven typography; and global publishing capabilities - all of which enable designers to push creativity to its limits with confidence and control.

Enhanced Design Experience
QuarkXPress 8 offers users an enhanced design experience so they can work faster and smarter by quickly and easily accessing the tools they need. The new, intuitive interface delivers updates that allow for more design with fewer clicks. For example:

- Picture Content Tool: Allows users to grab, rotate, and scale images in real-time without typing in numbers or switching from tool to tool.
- Item Tool and Text Content Tool: Smart behaviour within these tools allows for less switching between tools, even for rotation and managing multiple items.
- New Bézier Pen Tools: Draw illustrations directly in QuarkXPress 8 with the redefined Bézier Pen tool.
- Workspace Enhancements: Include new buttons for instant access to master pages and exporting to PDF, EPS, SWF, and HTML - plus new split-view buttons, enhanced contextual menus, and customisable active pasteboards.
- Measurements Palette: Further enhanced to make even more functions easily accessible, including with new clickable controls for on-the-fly drop-shadow modification.
- Drag-and-Drop: Drag text and pictures from the desktop, Adobe® Bridge, iPhoto®, or any other application that supports drag and drop. Alternatively, drag content from QuarkXPress to Photoshop®, Illustrator®, Microsoft® Word, and other applications for direct editing.

The new interface and design experience QuarkXPress 8 brings is already receiving positive reviews from industry experts. Analyst and consultant Andreas Pfeiffer is the authour of many productivity reports for the design and publishing industry and specialises in benchmarking creative software. He notes, "QuarkXPress 8 manages one of the most difficult tasks in software development: to rethink the user interface to make it more efficient, more productive, and more enjoyable, without alienating the experienced user. The potential productivity gains of the new release should be considerable."

David Carson, world-renowned designer who's first book, The End of Print, is the top-selling graphic design book of all time, said, "In QuarkXPress 8 you can see Quark has really paid attention to how designers work. The new user interface is fluid and uncluttered, which is exactly the environment I like to design in. I love the new picture box features that enable mouse-driven manipulation of the images to scale, rotate and especially the live cropping previews. It means I no longer have to spend time switching tools or typing in numbers and the new drag and drop capabilities should make working between applications and my desktop even easier."

Designer-driven Typography
QuarkXPress has always had a reputation for precise typographic control, and QuarkXPress 8 delivers powerful and advanced text features in a way that puts even more control in the hands of the designer. It is the first page-layout application to offer hanging characters with paragraph-by-paragraph control, multiple and easy-to-use presets, and the freedom for users to create and share their own hanging character settings. QuarkXPress 8 also offers unprecedented control over baseline grid settings, the ability to apply unique grid settings to individual boxes, and a Grid Styles feature that can keep even complex documents consistent.

Design Across Media
QuarkXPress 8 allows for synchronised and simultaneous design across print, Web, and Flash. Users can incorporate sound, video, animation, and interactivity into their layouts through a built-in, designer-friendly interactive layout tool that was previously available as Quark Interactive Designer. Without any programming skills, designers and creative professionals can share print content on the Web and in Flash format without purchasing multiple applications or learning code. This functionality enables QuarkXPress users to create fully integrated print, Web, and Flash campaigns with shared images, text, styles, and more.

Global Publishing
With QuarkXPress 8, one global file format supports advanced eastern and western typography for more than 30 languages. All editions of QuarkXPress 8 share the same dictionaries, include hyphenation functionality, and support the import, formatting, and output of East Asian text. American and European users can switch the language of their user interface to fit their needs and all users can open and print a file created in any edition of QuarkXPress 8 without experiencing reflow.

The QuarkXPress 8 Plus Edition is built for users who require in-depth features for the formatting of East Asian text. The Plus Edition includes access to dozens of enhanced East Asian features, such as more than 20 additional OpenType® font features, a user-friendly character spacing feature, a true ideographic grid with character count, and the ability to apply grid styles that can be applied at the page and box level.

Work Faster and Smarter
QuarkXPress 8 users will work faster and smarter with a range of updates to commonly-used features. This includes native Illustrator file import to complement the existing native Photoshop® support, WYSIWYG font rendering, advanced guide management with Guide Manager Pro, Item Styles to enable simultaneous control of formatting for multiple items, support for importing PDF version 1.7 and earlier, and Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG) based Output Styles and GWG-based Job Jackets® support.

"QuarkXPress 8 demonstrates our understanding of the way designers work today, and underscores Quark's commitment to continually providing innovative software that pushes the design experience forward," said Tim Banister, General Manager of Desktop Technology for Quark. "We have combined highly intuitive software with the design control elements that are critical in the creative process, and as a result believe QuarkXPress 8 will not only be a seamless upgrade for existing QuarkXPress users, but the most accessible professional page-layout software for new users to learn as well."

My Switch from Boot Camp to VMWare Fusion

My platform of choice is a MacBook Pro (or Mac of some description) running Mac OS X Leopard. I just love the way Leopard is so stable and let's me get on with being creative. In some circumstances I just need to delve into Windows XP. Mainly to run my accounting software, but also my kids ask me to run little utilities and exe files they download (from trusted sites). I used to use Apple's Boot Camp, but I got really fed up of rebooting my Mac every time I needed to run Windows XP. This is where VMWare Fusion is so powerful, I can run virtual machines right within OS X Leopard, without needing to restart. It really does make life a lot simpler.
I switched to VMWare Fusion because I wanted the Best of Both Worlds.

Please check out my video and feel free to leave your comments.

Roxio 9 - Tonnes of new features

Roxio®, a division of Sonic Solutions®, the leader in digital media software, redefines Mac burning yet again with the introduction of Toast® 9 Titanium. Toast 9 allows consumers to record high-definition content from high-definition (HD) camcorders and favourite HD programming from Elgato's EyeTV devices to Blu-ray Disc (BD). Users also have the option to burn HD video and slide shows on standard DVDs. Having used Toast for many years now, I was very excited to learn of this release, it is well worth reading on...

For on-the-go entertainment, Toast 9 introduces Roxio Streamer(tm). Streamer allows users to stream video content stored on their home Mac® to a Wi-Fi connected iPhone® or iPod® Touch or any Internet connected Mac or PC. Already the first choice for music fans wishing to create great sounding CDs and DVDs, Toast 9 offers the ability to capture streaming audio for recording Internet radio. Another Toast innovation allows captured music tracks to be automatically tagged with song titles, artist or other related information.

Toast 9 Titanium is available direct from Roxio at www.roxio.co.uk for £69.99. The High Definition/Blu-ray Disc (HD/BD) plug-in, which is needed to author BD video is sold separately for £14.99 and is available free for those who purchase Toast 9 online at www.roxio.co.uk until 13th April 2008.

"With the growing adoption of high-definition devices, comes the need for consumer applications that allow users to enhance and enjoy their favourite movies, photos and music on HDTVs or on-the-go," said Vito Salvaggio, vice president of consumer products, Sonic Solutions. "With high-definition video authoring, remote streaming of personal and commercial content, as well as exciting audio innovations, Toast 9 continues its long history of breakthrough features that empower Mac users to make the most of their digital media."

Toast 9 is packed with new features and enhancements that set the standard for burning, watching, listening and sharing digital content on the Mac and beyond.

New Feature Highlights:

  • Blu-ray Disc Support - Store as many as 12,500 music tracks, 50,000 photos, and hours of high-definition video on a single 50 GB Blu-ray Disc.
  • Mac & PC Data Spanning - Span large files across multiple discs, including Blu-ray Discs, for easy retrieval on any Mac or PC.
  • Life in High-Def - Enabled by a HD/BD plug-in, consumers can burn HD video content to Blu-ray Disc and watch it on their HDTV using any BD set top player. For consumers who do not own a BD burner or media, the plug-in allows burning high-definition content to standard DVDs. Users can also create HD video projects using footage from AVCHD camcorders or recorded TV shows or movies.
  • Video Editing - Easy removal of unwanted video segments from Elgato's EyeTV and QuickTime® video files before burning the final project to disc or exporting it to a portable player.
  • Toast 9 includes a variety of innovative features designed to simplify and accelerate the otherwise time consuming and CPU intensive video conversion process. These include Batch DVD-Video conversion to enable consumers to queue multiple video files for use with Roxio's Fit-to-DVD(tm) compression technology. The Fit-to-DVD compression technology enables consumers to compress large files to fit on a single layer 4.7 GB disc. Pause and Resume buttons enable users to suspend and later resume a video conversion project, and a Video Quality Preview enables users to review a snippet of converted video to verify video quality prior to initiating a complete file conversion.
  • Library Extension - Build an extensive audio library by capturing any audio playing through the Mac, including Internet audio.
  • Audio Fingerprinting - Automatically identify untagged music files and add song titles, artists and genres, eliminating the mystery of "Track_01".
  • Perfect Mixes - Create perfect mixes with DJ-style crossfades and transitions, output level adjustments, and enhancement filters.

Mac OS X Leopard Pocket Guide

No matter how much Mac experience you have, Mac OS X Leopard requires that you get reacquainted. There's a new look, a Quick Look, something called Stacks, a Time Machine, Spaces, and more. So what do Mac aficionados need to get to know Leopard? A clear and concise resource illuminating how best to use and unleash the operating system's powerful new features.

O'Reilly's newest release, Mac OS X Leopard Pocket Guide, fills this need. This timely new resource by Mac expert Chuck Toporek comes packed with more than 300 tips and techniques. It covers all the details you need to learn Leopard's new features, configure your system, and get the most out of your Mac... fast.

"For me, there's a lot to love about Mac OS X Leopard," says Toporek. "The two big features that I can't live without now are Time Machine and Spaces. With Time Machine, there's no reason not to back up the Macs in my home office. It's automatic, and best of all it's transparent after you get through the initial backup."

As for Spaces, "it is... without a doubt... the best feature in Leopard! I do all of my writing on a MacBook, so there's not much screen there to work with. But with Spaces, I can have up to 16 virtual screens to work with, and I can configure it to have applications open in a specific Space. For example, I have Word in Space 1, Firefox in Space 2, iChat and AdiumX running in Space 3, Terminal in Space 4, and so on."

For Mac newbies, Toporek included a Survival Guide that explains how to adapt and a chapter on Mac OS X's key features. Experienced Mac users can leap right to the heart of Leopard with chapters on system preferences, applications and utilities, and configuration. Throughout this pocket guide, clear, easy-to-grasp tables, concise descriptions, and step-by-step instructions that explain:

. What's new in Leopard, including the Time Machine
. How to use Leopard's totally revamped Finder
. All about Spaces and how to quickly flip among them
. How to find things with Spotlight
. How to use Leopard's enhanced Parental Controls
. Handy keyboard shortcuts to increase your efficiency
. Quick tips for setting up and configuring your Mac to make it your own

So if you want to get in on the Leopard buzz and get started taming Apple's new cat now, this is the guide to keep close at hand.

Chuck Toporek is a Mac technology geek and a senior acquisitions editor with Addison-Wesley, a division of Pearson Education. He is the author of three Mac books and one medical book, and he has written for MacAddict and Macworld magazines.

You get Bandwidth Control, Free FTP Alias Droplets, and a Dock Menu to name just a few. $25 buys you a single license.

Apple Release OS X Leopard 10.5.1 Update

Apple have been hard at work fixing and tweaking their latest operating system. Available through Software Update, or as a standalone installer, 10.5.1 fixes a slew of things. Amongst the fixes are:

  • Allows password-protected accounts on AirPort Disks to show up on in the Finder's Shared Sidebar.
  • Restores the functionality of the progress bar during permission repairs in Disk Utility.
  • iCal alarms are now more reliably delivered via email.
  • Improves stability in Mail when resizing columns in the message viewer or switching between Stationery templates in email messages.
  • Addresses a potential data loss issue when moving files across partitions in the Finder.
  • Addresses formatting issues with certain drives used with Time Machine (specifically, single-partition MBR drives greater than 512 GB in size as well as NTFS drives of any size and partition scheme).
There is a lot more besides just this short list. Shame it did not fix my issue with a crawling internet connection when using my wifi. Oh, and the printer queues still stay open after all my documents have finished printing. And and and, my Quark Xpress will not print to my Xerox Phaser 6180, unless I create a PDF and print that instead. Anyway, full details of the update can be found here.
