Vodafone UK launches a full Windows Phone 8 roster on February 6th

Vodafone's British division has been shy to embrace Windows Phone much at all in recent months. There'll be no such reservation as of February 6th, when the carrier starts offering a wide array of Windows Phone 8 devices. HTC's Windows Phone 8X and 8S will ship in subdued colors, while the (partly expectedLumia 620820 and 920 will be available in livelier hues. We've yet to hear about pricing -- and there's no mention of Samsung's ATIV S, for completists -- but the launch remains good news for UK residents who want to try Microsoft's approach to smartphones without leaving the Red Dot network.

Three won't charge extra for 4G, unlike EE

Three won't charge extra for 4G when it launches later this year. Unlike the pricey EE, the company promises there won't be separate 3G and 4G price plans -- which means you could get 4G for as little as £7 per month, if it doesn't change its current deals.

Three's 4G service will launch in the second half of this year, using the 1,800MHz airwaves it's buying from EE. You'll need a phone with LTE gubbins built-in to benefit from the faster mobile Internet connection, but once you've got the right phone there's no extra cost.

When 4G launches in or after the summer, existing customers won't need to change price plans or SIM cards. If you own an iPhone 5Nokia Lumia 920 or Sony Xperia Z you won't even have to change phones. The latest Apple iPad mini and iPad with retina display tablets are also ready for 4G.

Soon the choice will be even wider with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE andBlackBerry Z10 arriving on Three imminently.

Three vs EE

The first 4G phone network here in the UK is EE, the network formed by the merger of Orange and T-Mobile. EE has come under fire for its prices, or more specifically, the stingey data limitsincluded with each price plan: £36 for 500MB of data, anyone?

By contrast, Three's SIM-only deals start at a mere £6.90 per month for 500MB of data -- you do have to buy the phone yourself, but as a monthly fee that's a quarter of the cost of EE's cheapest 4G deal.

Opt for Three's One Plan and you can bag yourself unlimited all-you-can-eat data from £12.90 per month. That's a 12-month contract too, so you're not tied into a two-year deal like many of EE's plans.

What is Ultrafast?

Three is adding 4G LTE to its Ultrafast network, which currently uses the DC-HSDPA standard. DC-HSDPA is a faster version of 3G -- think of it as 3.5G -- and allows compatible phones to connect to the Web faster than 3G, even when you can't get 4G.

DC-HSDPA currently reaches half the UK population in 50 towns and cities. It's planned to reach 80 per cent of the population by the end of March. Three hasn't yet revealed how wide its 4G coverage will be.

The other phone networks don't have access to the 1,800MHz spectrum and have to buy different airwaves in an auction currently being held by Ofcom. The telecoms watchdog expects the first rival 4G services to launch in May.

Google Nexus 4 delivery is less than 48 hours, not 1-2 weeks

Not only is the Google Nexus 4 back on sale, but it's already dropping through phone fans' letterboxes less than 48 hours later -- much less than the one- or two-week wait Google warned us about.

When we say the Nexus 4 is fast, we're usually talking about the quad-core processor, responsive 4.7-inch screen and slick Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software. But CNET reader Dan Tooth dropped us a line to tell us his 16GB Nexus 4 is pretty speedy at crossing the country too, arriving this morning less than 48 hours after he ordered it.

Like many keen phone fans, Dan was quick off the mark, completing his order just seven minutes after the phone returned to Google Play at 3pm on Wednesday. And he's not the only one, as other readers report that a new Nexus dropped through their letterbox too to brighten up this rainy morning.

That's a delivery time of just over a day and a half, much less than the 1-2 weeks currently estimated by Google -- and a far cry from the 6-7 week wait some customers faced last year.

The Nexus 4 is still available today, making this probably the longest uninterrupted period it's been on sale. LG, which builds the Nexus 4, and Google, which created the software, blame each other for the stock snafu: Google claims supply has been erratic, while LG says Google disastrously underestimated the demand. But the problem seems to have been sorted, and fingers crossed we've seen the last Sold Out sign on Google Play.

The 8GB Nexus 4 costs £240 and the 16Gb model costs £280. You can buy two of each at a time, and hey, you may have it within a day or two.

4G EE comes to 9 new towns from Southend to Sunderland

Nine more towns just had their mobile data speeds given a kick in the pants as EE, Britain's first 4G network, expands its 4G LTE coverage.

The lucky nine are Amersham, Bolton, Chelmsford, Hemel Hempstead, Southend-on-Sea, Stockport, Sunderland, Sutton Coldfield and Wolverhampton.

That makes a total of 27 towns and cities covered by EE, the phone network formed from the merger between Orange and T-Mobile. EE promises more towns will also be connected by the end of March, including Bradford, Coventry, Rotherham, and Watford, and West Bromwich.

Mobile coverage is never entirely certain so whack your postcode into EE's coverage checker before you shell out for a 4G contract.

EE has drawn flak for its pricing, or more specifically the amount of data you get for each pricy contract. The network responded this month by adding a new cheapest tariff and a 20GB data deal.

The latest addition to EE's LTE line-up is the new BlackBerry Z10, announced yesterday and on sale today. Other phones and tablets that connect to the Web pretty darn quick include the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.

Sony Xperia SP and Xperia L Leaked

Sony already treated us to the beautiful Xperia Z during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, but like any good phone maker it’s not slowing down. The company apparently has two new Android smartphones up its sleeves, dubbed the Xperia SP and the Xperia L. Both devices were recently revealed on an Indonesian telecom website.

XperiaBlog said it dug up information on both devices and suggested the Xperia SP will be the higher-end smartphone of the two devices. It’s allegedly equipped with a 720p display and a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.7GHz. We presume it will also run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, although that’s still an unknown at this point.

Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia L will have a lower 854 x 480-pixel resolution and a dual-core Snapdragon processor clocked at 1GHz. It will apparently launch with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

We have no idea when these phones will launch, if ever, but there’s always a chance Sony will discuss them during Mobile World Congress at the end of February.

Nokia begins its Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade rollout

Talk of Microsoft finally deploying Windows Phone 7.8 has been building to a crescendo -- and we're glad to confirm it's more than just noise. The more customizable home and lock screens, Marketplace improvements and numerous under-the-hood upgrades are rolling out to all of Nokia's Windows Phone 7.5 devices, starting today and continuing through February. The company hasn't confirmed who goes first, although AT&T's Lumia 900 is believed to be part of the earliest wave. Other upgrades will depend on carrier timing, if you're using a locked phone, but the plan to push 7.8 is still good news for those who've wanted to keep their early Lumias as current as possible.

BlackBerry Z10 Shows Up in U.K. Store Hours Before Official Launch

RIM’s next great hope, BlackBerry 10, is about to be uncaged and let loose. In the meantime, devices running the company’s new OS, like the much rumored and often leaked Z10, is already out in the wild at one U.K. store. It looks exactly as we expected it to look.

The picture comes from a Twitter user at a Phone4U store, where the device will likely be on sale in a matter of hours. An earlier Vodafone leak suggested the Z10 would launch today.

The tipster said Phones4U also has the white one in stock, and that both are set to go on sale at 5 p.m. However, spots such as Carphone Warehouse only got black models of the Z10 in—white models aren’t expected to show up until Feb. 15.
